What is the practical difference between white quartzite and white quartz?
While their names are similar, they are fundamentally different materials. White Quartzite is a natural, metamorphic rock known for its extreme hardness, heat resistance, and unique, natural veining. White Quartz is an engineered, man-made slab composed of crushed quartz, resins, and pigments. Quartz is non-porous and requires no sealing, but it is less heat-resistant than natural quartzite.
How often does white quartzite need to be resealed after installation?
The standard recommendation is to reseal white quartzite at least once per year. However, the exact frequency depends on the quality of the initial sealant and the amount of use the countertop receives. You can perform a simple "water test": if a few drops of water no longer bead up on the surface and instead darken the stone, it is time to reseal.
Why is my white quartzite countertop scratching or etching?
This issue is almost always due to the stone being mislabeled by the supplier. True, high-quality quartzite is harder than granite and will not etch from common household acids (like lemon juice) or scratch from a knife. Often, softer stones like marble or dolomite (which do scratch and etch easily) are incorrectly sold as "soft quartzite."
